Is a Medieval castel still intact, built at the beginning of the 1200s by the Comune of Siena to oversee the border territory between the State of Siena and the State of Florence.  In spite of its truly compact size, the town has a rich past of historic events and episodes which you can come to understand by visiting Monteriggioni with a local guide, stopping perhaps at the nearby hamlet of Abbadia a Isola, home of one of the oldest churches in the area, built along the ancient Via Francigena, a Medieval pilgrimage route connecting Northern Europe with Rome. Along the road from Siena to San Gimignano there are numerous castles to be visited, such as Celsa and Cetinale, as well as hermitages like the Eremo di San Leonardo al Lago and the Eremo di Lecceto.
