For art lovers, San Gimignano offers a wealth of choices

For art lovers, San Gimignano offers a wealth of choices.  The Palazzo Comunale (Town Hall) opens to visitors its magnificent rooms such as the Dante Room, frescoed with incredibly well-preserved knightly and religious scenes painted by great artists from the Sienese and Florentine Schools, and home to a rich collection of art by masters including Pinturicchio and Benozzo Gozzoli, the latter being the creator of the celebrated pictorial cycle of The History of St. Augustine within the church of the same name.  The collegiate church, dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption, holds magnificent pictorial cycles like the History of Christ by the workshop of Simone Martini and the History of Santa Fina in the chapel dedicated to the great local saint, decorated by the workshop of Ghirlandaio, plus the Annunciation by Jacopo della Quercia.  Visitors eager to discover the Etruscan-Roman history of the city or to delve into the treasures of the Spezieria Santa Fina or to explore works of contemporary art are invited to come with me and visit the Santa Fina compound.
